Tupolev Design Bureau Celebrates 95th Anniversary

The Bureau was founded on October 22, 1922 by the famous Soviet aircraft designer A. N. Tupolev.

In 1922, A. N. Tupolev was appointed Head of the Commission for the Construction of Metal Aircraft at the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI). Since then, the experienced design bureau for design and production of all-metal aircraft of various classes, which was formed and headed by A. N. Tupolev, has started operating in the framework of TsAGI.

Under the leadership and with the active participation of the general designers A. N. Tupolev, A. A. Tupolev and their successors, the Bureau team has created a big number of high-class aviation equipment: all-metal multi-engine monoplanes of the 1920-1930s ANT-4 (TB-1), ANT-6 (TB-3), ANT-20 Maxim Gorky, record-breaking ANT-25, ANT-40 (SB) high-speed bomber, one of the best front-line bombers of the World War II Tu-2, the world-renowned post-war long-range bomber Tu-16, the first Soviet jet passenger aircraft Tu-104, the family of long-range supersonic Tu-22/Tu-22M bombers, the family of Tu-124, Tu-134 and Tu-154 passenger airliners, widely spread both in the USSR and abroad, first in the Soviet Union and one of the first in the world long-haul passenger airliner Tu-114, the world's first supersonic passenger aircraft Tu-144, supersonic strategic bomber-missile carrier Tu-160, a family of modern long-range passenger aircraft Tu-204/214.

At present, Tupolev PJSC is a member of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), established in accordance with the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation on February 20, 2006.

On June 1, 2014, Tupolev OJSC was reorganized by merging with Kazan Aviation Plant named after S. P. Gorbunov, since then the latter has obtained the legal status of the branch of Tupolev PJSC.

Today the company includes four branches: Kazan Aviation Factory n. a. S. P. Gorbunov – branch of Tupolev PJSC, Flight Test and Development base in Zhukovskiy, Ulyanovsk Design Bureau – branch of Tupolev PJSC, Samara Design Bureau – branch of Tupolev PJSC.

Since 1972, the Kazan Aviation Institute (nowadays Kazan National Research Technical University named after A. N. Tupolev), bears the name of A. N. Tupolev. The name of the famous aircraft designer inspires many generations of students to reach new heights in mastering the most modern technologies.
